Quarterback transfers have become an official trend for Nebraska football

Nebraska football has a list of great quarterbacks that would make many college football programs across the nation blush.

We’re talking players like Tommie Frazier, Turner Gill, Jerry Tagge, Scott Frost, and Eric Crouch. That’s a list that includes multiple national championships and a Heisman Trophy winner, so it’s nothing to scoff at.

There’s a lot of history there, which would lead one to believe that quarterback recruits are bursting at the seams to head over to Lincoln and join that group of notable signal-callers. But Nebraska’s recent stretch of quarterback recruiting has not been great, as illustrated below by Dan Hoppen.

Tommy Armstrong Jr. did have a great career for the Huskers and he left Lincoln as a four year starter, but as is made clear by the rash of transfers, the Cornhuskers haven’t exactly been “hitting” on their quarterback recruits since 2008.

Transfers aren’t uncommon in college football and they certainly aren’t uncommon at a position where only one player can play and if that players is good, outside of injury the chances of a backup playing can be pretty small. Case in point: Tristan Gebbia is intending to transfer away from Nebraska after losing out in Nebraska’s starting quarterback battle.

Still, this is a huge list of quarterbacks that just didn’t work out on Lincoln, which makes one wonder if it’s time for the Huskers to change up their recruiting strategy at the signal-calling position.

Of course, coaching changes certainly play a huge role in that, but unless true freshman and newly minted starter Adrian Martinez lights the world on fire, there’s a concerning trend happening in Lincoln that new head coach Scott Frost (aforementioned above) will have to quickly turn around.
