Quick breather: C.J. Stroud didn’t get much work in during Ohio State’s Wednesday practice

Appearing in three games as Justin Fields’ backup in 2020, which featured a 48-yard rushing touchdown in Ohio State’s 52-12 throttling of Michigan State on December 5, redshirt freshman C.J. Stroud has pulled away from freshman Kyle McCord and classmate Jack Miller in the Buckeyes’ 2021 quarterback competition.

The 6-foot-3, 218-pound native Californian did not participate much in Wednesday’s practice, however, but there is no need for Ohio State fans to be concerned, as it was simply a day of rest as the September 2 season-opener at Minnesota rapidly approaches.

“Something typically, we do is just shut them down at times with their arms,” head coach Ryan Day said, via Cleveland.com’s Nathan Baird.

“So that’s all that was.”

The Buckeyes – who have an excellent record of quarterback play over the last 13 seasons, dating to Terrelle Pryor’s enrollment in 2008 – received a boost to position room on August 2 when Southlake, Texas’ Quinn Ewers, a five-star prospect in the 2022 class, announced he would reclassify to 2021 and joined the program on August 15.

Ohio State’s first action of 2021, which takes place on a Thursday, will kick at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
