Rapid Reaction: Jaden Ivey, Zach Edey dominant in Purdue’s first-round win over Yale

Jaden Ivey’s explosiveness and Zach Edey’s size was an equation even Ivy League program Yale couldn’t figure out on Friday afternoon in Milwaukee. The two All-B1G stars flourished in the first-round matchup, leading the Boilermakers to a 78-56 victory.

Ivey scored a game-high 22 points for Purdue while Edey came up a rebound short of a double-double, getting 16 points and 9 boards. Trevion Williams came off the bench and had provided a nice spark with 8 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists, too.

Caleb Furst also had a solid game off the bench with 10 points.

It was a shootout in the opening minutes of the game, with both Purdue and Yale scoring at a high level out of the gate. Ivey proved to be hard to stop early in the contest, scoring 15 of the Boilers’ first 25 points.

Purdue jumped out to an early lead, but Yale’s early shot-making allowed the Bulldogs to keep it close. Yale took a 16-15 advantage at the 13:07 mark thanks to a made jumper from Azar Swain. After that bucket, Purdue went on a 10-0 run to take a 9-point lead and never looked back.

The Boilermakers owned a 46-33 halftime lead. Yale made a quick run out of the locker room to close the gap to 9 points, but Purdue was able to pull away without much issue. Matt Painter’s team ended the game with the largest lead of 28 points.

After struggling in the B1G Tournament title game against Iowa, Purdue was sound in ever phase of the game on Friday. The Boilers shot 43% from the floor, outrebounded Yale 42-33 and won the free throw battle 33 to 11. Purdue converted 27 times from the charity stripe while the Bulldogs knocked down just 6.

With the win, Purdue was able to rinse the bitter taste of last year’s first-round loss to No. 13 seed North Texas out of its mouth. The Boilermakers will shift their attention to the winner of the matchup between No. 6 seed Texas and No. 11 seed Virginia Tech.
