Rapid Reaction: Justin Fields, Buckeyes all aces in Ryan Day’s head coaching debut

Final Score: Ohio State 45, FAU 21
Brief Recap: Though FAU did find its footing and score some points in the second half, Ohio State was never really threatened in the season opener. The Buckeyes raced out to a 28-0 lead before the Owls got on the board with a couple of field goals. In the end, Ohio State coasted to an easy win behind a hot start in Ryan Day’s head coaching debut.
Key Moment: Take your pick from a handful of Justin Fields highlights. He quickly showed what he can do, running in his first score from 51 yards out just minutes into the game. But we’re going to go with Fields’ touchdown toss to Binjimen Victor to make it 21-0 in the first quarter. Fields demonstrated nice touch on the pass and looked sharp throwing the ball all afternoon.

Key Stat: 22, the number of rushing yards allowed by the Ohio State defense. FAU did find the end zone twice in the fourth quarter to go with two field goals, but the Buckeyes looked strong defensively. Obviously, the level of competition is about to get stronger, but it is a good sign Ohio State was caught sleeping against Lane Kiffin’s owls.
Key Player: With all due respect to the rest of the team, this afternoon was all about Fields. The heralded transfer was surrounded with expectations in the offseason, and he did not disappoint. Fields completed 19 of 26 passes for 229 yards and 4 TDs. His completion percentage could have been even higher if not for a couple of drops by OSU receivers. Fields also flashed his dual-threat ability with 66 yards on the ground and another touchdown.
What it Means: Justin Fields made it abundantly clear there will be no lingering quarterback battle following Week 1. The offense was balanced and electric under his leadership, finishing with over 200 yards both on the ground and through the air. Obviously, Fields and company will have to maintain that level of play against stronger competition. But all signs are pointing up after an impressive Week 1.
