The announcement of the the College Football Playoff expansion divided fans and analysts alike.
Some fans were angry that an expansion could negate the meaning and tradition of smaller rivalries. But, for ESPN analyst and College GameDay host Rece Davis, the expansion is a good thing.
Davis made his case for the expansion on the Paul Finebaum show Tuesday.
“I think it’s time for the Playoff to expand, I think we’re all looking forward to games that matter at the end,” said Davis, the host of ESPN’s “College GameDay.” “But it comes at a cost, and I don’t understand why people don’t just accept it. If you want to say that it’s more important to me to have an Oklahoma State-Kansas State game still mean something in November, and that’s more important to me than having an Alabama-LSU, like the 2019 game, basically be a winner-take-all. If you want to say the former’s more important than the latter, that’s your right to think that, but I don’t like the idea that people say, ‘That doesn’t matter,’ yes it does.”
Although Davis is in favor of the expansion, he does recognize that there will be a price to pay for the move:
“From my standpoint, I’m not going to be quiet about acknowledging that. Hopefully that won’t be at a cost that diminishes the experience for fans and for anybody on any given Saturday throughout the regular season.”
The rest of Davis’ thoughts on the expansion can be heard in the full interview:
