Three Big Ten teams — and a host of others — have a chance to make a major addition to next season’s roster.
4-star shooting guard Tamar Bates is back on the market after de-committing from Texas. The Longhorns lost coach Shaka Smart to Marquette this offseason, causing the change-of-heart from Bates.
According to college basketball insider Jake Weingarten, a number of teams have reached out since his recruitment opened back up. Those teams include Indiana, Illinois and Purdue.
Former Texas commit and a Top-50 senior Tamar Bates, tells @Stockrisers that the following programs are involved in his recruitment since his release:
Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Indiana, Marquette, Oregon, Illinois, Mizzou, and Purdue.
Very *very* skilled shooting guard.

Other teams in the mix are Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Marquette, Oregon and Missouri.
With Smart now with Marquette, it seems likely they will receive strong consideration. However, Bates would be a welcomed addition to any major program.
There’s an obvious need for his skillset at Illinois, who is looking to replace Adam Miller in the transfer portal.
Bates currently attends IMG Academy in Florida but is originally from Kansas City.
According to 247Sports Composite rankings, Bates is the No. 56 overall player and the No. 14 overall shooting guard in the 2021 class.
