The trend of major college football coaching announcements coming the day after the end of the regular season continues in 2019.

Sunday afternoon, Adam Maya of Sports Illustrated reported that USC plans to dismiss head coach Clay Helton. The announcement is expected to come by Monday, according to the report. Helton completed his fourth season at USC last weekend.

However, shortly after Maya’s report, several other reports trickled out, saying that USC has not made a decision on Helton’s status.

Helton was 40-21 in four seasons with the Trojans. He guided his team to Pac-12 title and a Rose Bowl victory during his run with the program. USC was 8-4 and inside the top 25 of the College Football Playoff rankings.

If the job does become available, Maya is reporting that USC’s top priority is former Utah, Florida and Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer. The university is hoping to have its new coach in place by the end of the week.

Meyer has said multiple times since retiring from Ohio State last December that he “believes he’s done coaching.” He has not, however, entirely denied the idea of a comeback.

Meyer is now tied to head coaching opportunities at USC and with the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
