A high school senior and North Texas football recruit was killed in an apartment complex shooting that occurred in Austin, Texas, according to a report from ESPN.

Willie Simmons III was one of three individuals killed in the Texas shooting that happened on Sunday. The Elgin Independent School District confirmed the sad news in a statement.

Simmons was a three-star member of North Texas’s 2021 recruiting class and was scheduled to join the program in the summer. Two women were also killed in the shooting, according to ESPN.

“We are heartbroken by the news of this senseless tragedy, and we extend our deepest condolences to the families of Willie Simmons III and Alyssa Broderick,” said Elgin Independent School District superintendent Jodi Duron. “The Elgin ISD community grieves the loss of these two young, promising souls.”

ESPN reported that 41-year-old Stephen Broderick has been arrested and that “the victims were all known to this suspect.”
