Former Colorado football player T.J. Cunningham was fatally shot on Sunday after a dispute with a neighbor over a parking spot, according to a report. He was 46.
According to the Denver Post, police responded to a reported shooting near a high school and middle school in Aurora, Colorado. When officers arrived on the scene, they found Cunningham had been shot multiple times.
Cunningham was transported to a nearby hospital, but died from his injuries on Monday.
Police arrested Marcus Johnson, 31, and charged him with first-degree murder. Johnson told police that he and Cunningham had an ongoing feud over a parking spot and were meeting up in an attempt to settle their differences. Johnson also said that Cunningham had attacked him earlier in the day.
The University of Colorado released a statement following the news of Cunningham’s death:
“We are deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the death of T.J. Cunningham. He was a good family man and had a strong passion for working with young people as evidenced by serving as an assistant high school principal. He was a good alum, an active alum, and took great pride in being a Colorado Buffalo.
“Our hearts go out to T.J.’s family on their tragic loss. We will miss him.”
Cunningham was a member of the Buffaloes football team from 1992-95, playing wide receiver and defensive back. He had 21 catches for 239 yards as a receiver while in Boulder.
He was selected in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks.
