Six days after being released by the organization, former Northwestern quarterback Trevor Siemian is re-signing with the New Orleans Saints, according to a report from the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero.

Entering his seventh professional season after being selected in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Siemian was added to the Saints’ roster on November 20, 2020, after they signed him off the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad.

Following the return of former Purdue Boilermaker Drew Brees from several fractured ribs, New Orleans waived Siemian on December 19, 2020, and signed him to their practice squad three days later.

He inked a reserve/futures contract with the team on January 18 and was waived on August 31, as part of the roster cutdown to 53 players.

In their first year of the post-Brees era, Florida State Seminole Jameis Winston won the Saints’ starting quarterback job, with BYU Cougar Taysom Hill set to serve as his backup. Siemian and Notre Dame’s Ian Book figure to reside on the practice squad in 2021, barring an injury ahead of them.

New Orleans will begin their regular season slate Sunday against the Green Bay Packers in a home game at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida. Originally scheduled to be held at the Caesars Superdome, the tilt was moved due to Hurricane Ida.

Appearing in 46 games for Northwestern from 2011-14, Siemian ranks fifth on the program’s all-time list with 5,931 yards and ninth with 27 touchdown tosses.
