Report: Governor of New Jersey recently discussed Rutgers’ vacancy with Greg Schiano
By Paul Harvey
Published:
According to a Tuesday report, the push is still on to bring former head coach Greg Schiano back to Rutgers.
The story has been going on honestly since the announcement of Chris Ash’s dismissal. Though a couple of different names have been floated for the vacancy at head coach, many have clamored for a reunion with Schiano.
That reunion reportedly took a step forward towards the end of last week. After Schiano presented a list of requests to Rutgers in order to take the opening, it was reported that the Scarlet Knights are ready to meet those requests.

As of Tuesday, no announcement has been made. However, a new report by James Kratch, Steve Politi, and Keith Sargeant with NJ Advance Media indicated that the Governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy, is now involved with the pitch to bring Schiano back to the program.
According to that report, Governor Murphy was brought in to help clear the hurdle of Schiano’s requests for updated football facilities at Rutgers:
Gov. Phil Murphy recently spoke to the former Scarlet Knights coach, NJ Advance Media has learned, amidst Rutgers’ effort to clear what is believed to be the last remaining hurdle between a reunion with Schiano and agree on a plan to update the football program’s facilities.
…
Dialogue between Murphy and Schiano is noteworthy considering Rutgers, a state university that derives about 22% of its operating budget from state appropriations, will presumably need support from Trenton in order to begin its next phase of facility upgrades – the final issue that needs to be ironed out in order to finalize Schiano’s return, according to several people with knowledge of the process.
Now that the Governor is involved in the pitch, it will be interesting to see if Rutgers and Schiano can hammer out an agreement in the coming days. For now, it is still more wait and see for the Scarlet Knights.
