Greg Schiano is not expected to return as Ohio State’s defensive coordinator for the 2019 season, according to a report.
Monday, Marc Givler of Rivals.com reported that Schiano will not return to the Buckeyes staff next fall. This would be the biggest staff change of the brief Ryan Day era in Columbus.
It was unclear whether Day cut ties with Schiano or if the defensive coordinator decided to step away from the program.
Schiano has been Ohio State’s defensive coordinator since 2016. The defense was never under more scrutiny than this season, when the Buckeyes struggled with wrapping up tackles and keeping opponents out of the end zone. Schiano came under particular fire after OSU’s 49-20 loss to Purdue in late October, ultimately costing the team a shot at the College Football Playoff.
Earlier Monday, WolverinesWire reported that Michigan defensive line coach Greg Mattison was leaving Ann Arbor to join Day’s staff in Columbus. There was no mention of what role the longtime Michigan assistant would fulfill.
Last offseason, Schiano was a top candidate for the head coaching job at Tennessee. Though it was all but done, an outraged fanbase forced the University to make a change and Schiano was then removed from consideration.
