Report: Indiana RB has entered NCAA transfer portal

Indiana’s running back room has gotten a bit smaller.

On Thursday, multiple outlets reported that Indiana running back Cole Gest has entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal and will look for opportunities to play elsewhere. The news comes just a few days before the Hoosiers play in their sixth game of the season on Saturday, hosting Rutgers.

Zach Osterman of the Indianapolis Star was one of several to report the news. With so many talented players in the running back room, Gest had fallen on the depth chart.

Gest has appeared in four games for IU this season, taking four carries for 12 yards and a touchdown. He’s also caught five passes, but hasn’t accumulated any total yardage.

Coming off an ACL injury last season, Gest was battling Stevie Scott, Sampson James and Ronnie Walker for carries out of the backfield. With so much talent, and a new offensive look in Bloomington, Gest just wasn’t able to work his way back up the depth chart.

Gest’s best season came in 2017, when he appeared in 10 games for the Hoosiers and rushed for 428 yards and a touchdown on 93 touches. He also had 10 receptions for 83 yards and a score.

Since Gest has already used his redshirt year, he will have one year of eligibility remaining, unless he’s granted a medical hardship waiver by the NCAA.

In his IU career, Gest played in 18 games and accounted for 598 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns.
