The wait is over. Former 5-star and Georgia quarterback Justin Fields is headed to Columbus to join Ohio State, according to a report.
Friday morning, Letterman Row reported that Fields is expected to be on campus in the afternoon and move in over the weekend. He’s expected to be a participant in the offseason program and spring practices.
Rumors about Fields’ interest in Ohio State began surfacing shortly after the 2018 regular season came to a conclusion. The Georgia quarterback reportedly wasn’t happy with the playing time he was receiving with the Bulldogs. Oklahoma and Florida State were also reportedly in the mix.
Bringing Fields to Columbus is a huge victory for new head coach Ryan Day, who officially took over the duties of his new role after the Buckeyes’ win over Washington in the Rose Bowl.
Fields’ decision does make it seem likely that Dwayne Haskins will likely depart for the NFL after an incredible season. Though he hasn’t made a decision just yet, Haskins and Fields have been talking about future plans. It seems unlikely that the former 5-star prospect would commit to the Buckeyes if Haskins planned to return for the 2019.
According to reports in December, Fields is expected to petition the NCAA for immediate eligibility. If Haskins does in fact head to the NFL Draft, Tate Martell will likely be Fields’ top competition for the starting job in 2019.
Fields played in 12 games for Georgia this season. He completed 27-of-39 pass attempts for 328 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 266 yards and four touchdowns in his freshman season.
Fields was the No. 2 prospect in the 2018 recruiting class.
