Justin Fields’ interest in Ohio State is reportedly increasing, thanks in no small part to Ryan Day accepting the head coaching job in Columbus.
Kyle Rowland of the Toledo Blade reported Friday morning that the Georgia quarterback is intrigued by a transfer to Ohio State because of Day’s impact. The former 5-star prospect would be a huge addition to the roster for the Buckeyes.
Rowland tweeted that “Momentum for a Justin Fields-to-Ohio State transfer is increasing,” and that the quarterback and those around him are “enamored by a potential pairing with Day.”

Day, of course, tutored Dwayne Haskins this past season, helping the Ohio State gunslinger to a nation-leading 4,580 passing yards and 47 passing touchdowns in 2018. The Buckeyes finished the season 12-1, winning the B1G and earning a spot in the Rose Bowl.
Haskins finished his season with a trip to the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York City, finishing third in the final voting.
After a monster season, Haskins is still contemplating whether he’ll return to Columbus or pursue the NFL, a decision that won’t come until after the Rose Bowl. While that decision may appear to loom large for Fields and his future, it’s likely that the Georgia QB would have sit out a season due to NCAA transfer rules.
Fields will appeal the NCAA in an attempt to gain immediate eligibility, though.
Playing time appears to be a major factor in Fields’ decision to test the transfer waters. With Jake Fromm in complete control of the Georgia offense, it may be some time before the Georgia native is handed the reins.
With Day in charge and (assuming) Kevin Wilson is still the offensive coordinator, Ohio State’s offense would be incredibly favorable to the quarterback position. The national brand the Buckeyes bring to the table doesn’t hurt, either.
In 12 games, Fields threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns while completing 27-of-39 pass attempts. He also added 266 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
