Cal wants Justin Wilcox to stick around for a little while.

In December, Cal and Wilcox agreed to a new contract after leading the Bears to a 7-6 season in 2018, a two-win improvement from the previous year. At the time, there were limited details about the new deal, but Cal Bears Maven was able to obtain more information.

Wilcox will earn $2.5 million this year, a $1 million increase from last year’s salary. In 2020, he receives a pay bump to $3.05 million and will eventually earn $3.6 million in 2023, with increases each year. The total guaranteed salary comes out to $15.9 million.

There are also incentive-based bonuses worked into Wilcox’s contract. He will earn an additional $25,000 for making a bowl game and $500,000 for leading the Bears to an undefeated regular season.

Wilcox enters his third season at Cal and has posted a 12-13 record in his first two years. After a 7-5 regular season, the Bears earned a trip to the Cheez-It bowl but fell short against TCU, losing 10-7 in overtime. It was the program’s first bowl appearance since 2015.

Before becoming the head coach at Cal, Wilcox spent one season (2016) as the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin.
