Report: Longtime Michigan State assistant lands head coaching job at Western Michigan

Longtime Michigan State assistant coach Dwayne Stephens is leaving East Lansing for Kalamazoo.
Tony Paul of The Detroit News reported on Monday that Western Michigan is expected to hire Stephens to be the next head coach of the program. Stephens has spent nearly two decades on Tom Izzo’s staff, joining in 2003.
Stephens has been the associate head coach for Michigan State for the past 10 seasons. He also played college basketball for the Spartans from 1989-93.

This will be Stephens’ first job as a head coach at the college level. Prior to joining Izzo’s staff in East Lansing, he also had stops at Oakland University and Marquette.
Western Michigan ended the 2021-22 season with an 8-23 record and a 4-16 mark in MAC play. The school parted ways with Clayton Bates after two seasons.
The Broncos were 13-39 the past two seasons.
