Report: Michigan QB opting out of 2020 season, expected to transfer

One of the contenders to be the next starting quarterback at Michigan has decided to opt out of the upcoming season, according to a report.
The Detroit News’ Angelique Chengelis reported on Wednesday that redshirt junior Dylan McCaffrey will opt out of the 2020 season. He is also expected to hit the NCAA transfer portal and explore options outside of Ann Arbor to continue his college football career.
McCaffrey will graduate from Michigan this December, meaning he would be immediately eligible at his next destination. He will also have two years of eligibility remaining.
McCaffrey was competing for the starting job at Michigan along with Joe Milton and Cade McNamara. The Wolverines are looking to replace two-year starter Shea Patterson, who’s eligibility expired following the 2019 season.
The report comes the same day that it was announced the B1G resume a fall football schedule. The season is set to begin the weekend of Oct. 24.
During his career at Michigan, McCaffrey has served as a backup quarterback behind Patterson. He’s appeared in 13 games over the last two seasons, completing 18-of-35 pass attempts for 242 yards and 3 touchdowns without an interception. McCaffrey also accounted for 166 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Michigan finished the 2019 campaign with a 9-4 record.
