Michigan State’s running back room is getting a little thinner, according to a report on Monday.

On Monday afternoon, Rainer Sabin of the Detroit Free Press reported that junior running back Connor Heyward has entered his name in the transfer portal and will explore other opportunities. Heyward did not dress for the Spartans in Saturday’s game against Indiana, saying he had a personal matter the kept him from the game.

Several had speculated that Heyward was entering the transfer portal last week. With the rise of Elijah Collins early in the season, Heyward has seen his number of carries diminish significantly from a year ago.

Heyward has appeared in four games the season, the maximum number of contests a player can compete in to maintain a redshirt status. Should he decide to move on, he’d have two years of eligibility remaining.

In four games, Heyward has taken 24 carries for 79 yards. He’s also caught seven passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. Last season, Heyward rushed f0r 529 yards and five touchdowns on 118 carries.

There hasn’t been any official word on Heyward’s status from Michigan State.
