A reunion between Joe Moorhead and Tommy Stevens sounds like it’s in the works.

247Sports reported on Friday that Mississippi State is the front-runner to land the former Penn State quarterback, who recently decided to leave the program. Stevens would be a graduate transfer and would be immediately eligible for Bulldogs in 2019.

Stevens played under Moorhead at Penn State in 2016 and 2017 when he was the offensive coordinator for the Nittany Lions.

Mississippi State is looking to replace Nick Fitzgerald, who started three years in Starkville. Keytaon Thompson was the leader to take over the starting job as a junior, but Having operated in Moorhead’s system for two years, Stevens might be able to jump in right away and serve as an affective player under center for the Bulldogs.

Stevens would provide Mississippi State with a nice dual-threat ability. In three years at Penn State, he was used in multiple roles and showed off his athleticism in several ways. He played receiver, ran the jet sweep and took snaps under center all while backing up Trace McSorley. He accounted for more than 850 total offensive yards and 14 yards while in State College.

With just one year of eligibility left, Stevens wanted to opportunity to be the starting quarterback at Penn State. A battle with Sean Clifford that would lead until the fall was unappealing to the senior and opted to spend his final season of eligibility elsewhere, a place he’d be able to start immediately.

Mississippi State might just be that place.
