Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts has created a short list of coaches to potentially fill the coaching vacancy. According to John Brice of Football Scoop, the coaches on the list being vetted for the vacancy are former Baylor Bears and Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule, former TCU Horned Frogs head coach Gary Patterson, and Army Black Knights head coach Jeff Monken.

Rhule started as a volunteer assistant at his alma mater at Penn State in 1998 and served as a head coach at Temple and Baylor collegiately before trying the NFL at Carolina. After 4 seasons at Temple, Rhule became the head coach of Baylor. In 2019, he was named Big 12 Coach of the Year following an 11-3 season.

Patterson was the head coach of TCU for 21 seasons from 2001 to 2021. During that time, he accumulated an overall record of 181-79 and was named AP Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2014.

After 4 seasons at Georgia Southern from 2010 to 2013, Monken became the head coach of Army in 2014 where he currently coaches. In his 9 seasons at Army, Monken has accumulated a current overall record of 61-48.

The report also suggests that Alberts is considering interim head coach Mickey Joseph for the full-time role. The Huskers have looked better at times under Joseph this season but are still struggling overall.
