A recent report indicates that the NIT plans to move forward with its annual postseason tournament following the college basketball season. There are likely to be some changes, though.

John Feinstein, an author and contributor to the Washington Post, is reporting that the NIT plans to host its annual tournament, though this year there will be 16 teams rather than the traditional 32. All games are expected to be held in New York.

Feinstein did not mention whether or not Madison Square Garden would still be hosting the tournament. Typically, the basketball cathedral in the heart of New York City hosts the final rounds of the NIT.

One other change to this year’s tournament is that conference regular season champions who do not earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament will not receive a guaranteed spot into the NIT. That is likely because of the limited number of teams that will be invited this year.

Like the NCAA Tournament last year, the NIT was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, just one college basketball postseason event has been called off, with the CIT announcing it will not move forward with this year’s tournament.
