A Notre Dame wide receiver has found himself in a little bit of legal trouble.
The Indianapolis Star reported that Javon McKinley was charged with three misdemeanors on Monday, including to Class A counts of battery, after being arrested on campus on Sunday. McKinley allegedly punched two University of Notre Dame Security Police officers.
McKinley was being assisted by the two officers back to his dorm room after he was found unresponsive in the back seat of an Uber vehicle.
From The Star:
McKinley, 6-2 and 215 pounds, reportedly “required a series of (sternum) rubs to regain consciousness” and began walking to his dorm with the officers’ assistance. He then stopped walking, at which point the officers reportedly said they could smell alcohol on his breath.
According to the report, McKinley, “unsteady on his feet,” then “tensed up” and tried to leave in the opposite direction of his dorm. Officers were concerned about McKinley “trying to wander off onto campus in his condition.”
In the officers’ attempt to restrain McKinley on a cold night, he reportedly punched both officers “in a rude, insolent or angry manner,” causing pain.
McKinley was later restrained and booked in the St. Joseph County Jail. In addition to the two battery charges, the receiver faces a Class C misdemeanor of illegal consumption.
His court date is scheduled for Feb. 28.
McKinley was a four-star receiver out of high school and was a member of Notre Dame’s 2016 recruiting class.
