Ohio State and athletic director Gene Smith have agreed to a contract extension, according to a report.

That’s per the Dispatch’s Joey Kaufman, who cites obtained documents.

This four-year extension keeps Smith with the Buckeyes until at least 2026. His annual base salary has been increased to $1.58 million, according to the report.

The new agreement is subject to approval by the board of trustees, which is expected to happen at a meeting on Wednesday.

Smith has been at Ohio State since 2005. He’s been a collegiate AD since 1986, also spending time at Eastern Michigan, Iowa State and Arizona State.

Earlier this year, Smith was reportedly a candidate for the Pac-12 Commissioner job. However, Smith denied that he had been contacted by the Pac-12.

Smith has proven to be one of the best athletic directors in all of college athletics. He hired Urban Meyer to replace Jim Tressel and Ryan Day to replace Meyer, both of which have turned out to be wildly successful hires. He also hired Chris Holtmann to replace Thad Matta in the men’s basketball program, and that is also looking to be a good decision.

Per the report, Smith’s new contract runs through June 30, 2026.
