Ohio State may be preparing for a College Football Playoff matchup in a couple of weeks, but that doesn’t mean the Buckeyes aren’t preparing for life after this season.
A report emerged Monday that Ohio State has added an opponent to an upcoming non-conference schedule. In 2024, the Buckeyes will host Southern Miss.
As per normal, a power five school such as Ohio State will pay to host a non-power five school such as the Eagles. That’s par for the course. What is odd is the fact that the Buckeyes have never played a game against a team from Mississippi.
Per a report by @FBSchedules, Ohio State will host Southern Miss on Aug. 31, 2024. Ohio State will reportedly pay Southern Miss $1.9 million to make the trip to Columbus, and it's set to be the Buckeyes' first-ever game against a team from Mississippi. https://t.co/UZIeN8UVsl

Ohio State has had little to zero issue with non-conference opponents during the regular season. This is especially true with teams outside of the power five.
Though the matchup is four years away, let’s look at the 2020 Southern Miss squad. The Eagles went 3-7 in 2020 and are not headed for any bowl action.
As for the rest of the Buckeyes’ 2024 schedule, the team still has one non-conference matchup open. Ohio State is scheduled to host Southern Miss and then head to Seattle to take on Washington.
