Greg Schiano has gone from running the defense of a B1G champion to running the defense for a Super Bowl champion.

Wednesday, Jim McBride of the Boston Globe reported that the New England Patriots will hire Schiano as the new defensive coordinator. This will be his first return to the NFL since being fired as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013.

Schiano spent the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator for Ohio State, helping lead the Buckeyes to a pair of B1G titles and a College Football Playoff berth. However, when Urban Meyer announced his retirement and Ryan Day was named the new head coach, Schiano was not retained.

Despite the 13-1 season, Ohio State experienced one of its worst defensive seasons in recent memories. The Buckeyes were plagued by injuries throughout the year, but struggled to keep opposing offenses out of the end zone.

Before landing at Ohio State in 2016, Schiano went 11-21 in two seasons with the Buccaneers. He also accumulated a 68-67 record in 11 seasons as the head coach at Rutgers.

The Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick are coming off their sixth Super Bowl victory after a 13-3 win over the Rams on Sunday.
