Report: Power Five AD says CFB Playoff expansion more likely than conference realignment

In the always-changing world of college athletics, two topics that tend to surface pretty frequently are conference realignment and College Football Playoff expansion. According to one anonymous Power Five athletic director, one of those is more likely than the other.
According to a report from Chip Brown of 247Sports, an unnamed Power Five athletic director believes the College Football Playoff field expanding is much more likely than seeing another series of conference realignment.
“In my opinion, the revenue/cable model has and will continue to change, so conference expansion is not as desirable as in the past,” the athletic director said.
“The College Football Playoff expansion conversation seems to be coming up more frequently by influencers.”
Expanding the College Football Playoff field has bee a conversation throughout the sport since, well, the beginning of the system. However, the idea of incorporating eight teams into the field has picked up series steam over the last year.
College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock has said recently that there’s no desire to make any significant changes at this time. But with the popularity of the sport and an opportunity to generate more revenue, nothing is ever off the table.
Earlier this week at Big 12 Media Days, commissioner Bob Bowlsby was asked if the conference would be interested in expansion. He responded by saying that the league “is happy with the 10 we have.”
While the future of the College Football Playoff seems to be uncertain at the moment, it sounds like significant conference realignment moves aren’t in the works at this time.
