Report: Southern Miss accepts invitation to new conference

Conference realignment is far from over. Another team is reportedly moving conferences at the FBS level.
According to Sports Illustrated reporter Ross Dellenger, Southern Miss will soon be on the move. The Eagles will be moving out of C-USA and joining the Sun Belt, starting play in the fall 2023.
Southern Miss was left out of the last realignment but was able to wiggle its way into the picture this year. Per Dellenger, the distribution amount will be about the same, but USM is expected to save around $400,000 in travel expenses.

C-USA could face some critical times ahead, as it’s rumored that Marshall and Old Dominion are looking at leaving the league, as well. Decisions from those two schools are expected to come next week.
The summer months saw plenty of change in college football, with new transfer rules, NIL legislation and conference realignment all occurring before the start of the 2021 season. Even with football in full force, the thoughts of realignment are still moving full steam ahead.
It should be interesting to see what moves are made next, and what the future looks like for the Sun Belt and C-USA.
