Robbie Hummel offered some insight into Purdue’s upset loss against Fairleigh Dickinson to open the NCAA Tournament, and what went wrong for the Boilermakers.

The former Purdue star shared his thoughts on Sirius XM.

“It’s not complicated,” he said. “If you shoot the ball the way they did from 3 and go 5-of-26, and Fairleigh Dickinson’s game plan is not complicated, it’s throw 4 people around Zach Edey, don’t let him post, and make everybody else beat you. And I don’t mean for this to be in a disrespectful way, but Purdue’s shooting, but Purdue’s shooting, and their shots were shots that you would shoot in Horse. A lot of them were wide open shots.”

Hummel then moved to the backlash directed at Matt Painter.

“So people are crushing Coach Painter, and I get it, the buck stops with him, because he is the head basketball coach, he recruits the team, he coaches the team,” Hummel said. “But as a player, if you’re getting wide open shots, your coach is doing something right, at the same time. They are wide open.”

About the struggles against the press, Hummel said that’s a different story, and he doesn’t understand why the press gives Purdue so much trouble at times.

“You’ve got to be a player too, and the coaching’s important, and you gotta play, and 5-of-26 is the story, 16 turnovers is the story,” Hummel said. “Honestly, Zach Edey just didn’t get enough help, and that’s what stinks, but they were missing wide, wide open shots.”
