In a move that will keep their iconic coach tied to the school through the 2028 season, the University of Alabama system board’s compensation committee approved a massive contract extension for Nick Saban on August 2.

Per the publicly announced terms, Saban’s base salary will remain $275,000, while his talent fee, which was $8.425 million in 2020-21, will increase by $400,000 annually, reaching $11.225 million in the final year of the deal.

Using these terms, he is set to become the first college football coach to receive $10 million in annual salary during the 2023-24 school year.

Serving as the Crimson Tide’s head coach since 2007, the 69-year-old Saban has guided his program to a 165-23 (96-15 Southeastern Conference) record, winning six national championships and seven league titles.

Three of these national championships have come in the College Football Playoff Era (since 2014), including the 2020 campaign triumph over Ryan Day’s Ohio State Buckeyes.

With Saban’s extension now formally complete, Alabama is set to open their 2021 season against the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Miami Hurricanes at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia on September 4 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
