Ron Bellamy has a much different group of wide receivers to work with in 2024 than he did in 2023.

Michigan’s top 2 receivers in 2023, Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson, are both in the NFL now. As a result, the team has not had much production from the WR position so far in 2024.

Ahead of Michigan’s Week 3 matchup, Bellamy was asked about the team’s WR room and if the staff considered adding more proven talent via the portal this offseason.

“It’s something that was discussed,” Bellamy said. “We’re not like other schools where we’re just chasing people. I think think the big thing for us is, we do like what we have in our room. We added some pieces in there. Now it’s time for the guys, including myself, we’ve all got to rise. The onus has been on that.”

The Wolverines did add 2 transfers, Amorion Walker and C.J. Charleston via the portal. However, Walker has yet to record a catch for the Wolverines while Charleston has just 1 catch for 22 yards.

With a team like Michigan that is fresh off of a national championship, one has to think there was an opportunity to add a big name or two in the portal. Instead, the team added on the fringes and hoped for improvement from the young guys as Bellamy mentioned.

“Obviously losing guys like Roman and Cornelius, they played a lot of football here at Michigan,” Bellamy said. “You know, the young guys … now is their time. Now is the time to show that they can play at this level.”

Entering Week 3, Semaj Morgan is the only wide receiver on Michigan’s roster who has more than 5 receptions so far this season. Colston Loveland, the team’s starting tight end, leads all pass-catchers with 16.

Michigan will be looking for more production from its wide receivers when it faces Arkansas State on Saturday.
