Rutgers is now being looked at to fill Texas A&M’s spot in the Gator Bowl.

The Scarlett Knights are 5-7 and are also eligible, much like their B1G counterpart Illinois. They also won the head-to-head matchup with the Fighting Illini during Week 9 of the regular season back in October.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports gave the case for Rutgers to play Wake Forest in the Gator Bowl from his Twitter account on Wednesday.

The Scarlet Knights have the highest APR of all the eligible 5-7 teams. Rutgers has an APR of 979, while Illinois is close with an APR of 970. Other than the Fighting Illini, Rutgers has wins against Temple, Syracuse, Delaware, and Indiana.

We’ll see who the NCAA goes with as the race to play in the Gator Bowl is on.
