Rutgers defensive line coach Jim Panagos will miss the 2020 season due to a medical issue.

Head coach Greg Schiano announced that news on Thursday afternoon, telling reporters that Panagos will need a knee replacement.

Assistant defensive line coach Charlie Noonan will become the interim, Schiano said.

Panagos is in his second stint with the Scarlet Knights after coaching there from 2012-15 as well. He spent last season as Minnesota’s defensive line coach. In 2017, he was nominated for the Broyles Award — which goes to the nation’s top assistant coach – for his work at Temple.

Noonan is a former Rutgers captain who previously coaches at Holy Cross and Lehigh. This is his first season back with the Scarlet Knights since his playing career, where he was a two year starter at defensive tackle while playing for Schiano.

Rutgers is scheduled to open its season vs. Michigan State on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
