A Rutgers defensive lineman is exploring opportunities to continue his college football career elsewhere.
On Wednesday, 247Sports reported that freshman defensive lineman Malachi Burby has entered his name in the NCAA transfer database. The news comes the same day that Greg Schiano was introduced as the next head coach of the Scarlet Knights.
Burby appeared in two games this season, making his debut in Rutgers’ win over Liberty. He is eligible to utilize his redshirt season, as he did not exceed appearances in four games this fall.
As a recruit, Burby was a three-star player and was ranked as the No. 103 defensive tackle in the country. He was also ranked as the 11th-best prospect out of the state of Connecticut.
Entering the transfer portal doesn’t necessarily force Burby to transfer, as he’d be allowed to return to Rutgers if it’s his best opportunity. However, it’s not uncommon to see players look for other options when a coaching change is made.
The Scarlet Knights finished the season 2-10 and failed to win a B1G game for the second straight season.
