Former Rutgers offensive coordinator John McNulty made a previous school record $625,000 last season. That mark was the most any assistant has ever made with the Scarlet Knights.
That will all change in 2019.
According to nj.com, new Rutgers OC Sean Gleeson — who comes from Oklahoma State — is set to make $805,000 in his first season in Piscataway as part of his three-year, $2.565 million contract.

Gleeson will make $855,000 in 2021 and then $905,000 in 2022. This record as being the highest-paid assistant in Scarlet Knights history may come to an end rather quickly, though.
Nj.com’s James Kratch wrote, “Rutgers is believed to be close to a deal with Michigan linebackers coach Anthony Campanile to take over as its new defensive coordinator, according to several individuals with knowledge of the situation. They were granted anonymity to discuss ongoing negotiations. If Campanile, a former Scarlet Knights player and assistant, takes the job his deal is expected to be worth more than Gleeson’s, according to one of the individuals.”
No matter how you shake it, Rutgers is willing to pay its head coach and assistants what programs across the country are paying. The Scarlet Knights want to be a factor in the Big Ten, not just a bottom-dweller and representative.
One way to do that? Pay top assistants to be dominant at their craft.
That’s what has helped Clemson become a national power these last few years, as defensive coordinator Brent Venables is making over $2 million per season running the Tigers’ defense.
