Ryan Day confirmed who will be calling plays on the offensive side of the ball at the start of the season. Eleven Warriors’ Dan Hope reported on what Day said.
Much to the delight or despair of Ohio State fans, Day stated he will be calling the majority of plays on offense early into the 2023 season. The team promoted WR coach Brian Hartline to OC after Kevin Wilson left to fill the HC opening at Tulsa.
“Brian’s going to certainly at times make some calls, and we’re going to discuss it in between series, but I think early, I’ll do the majority of it. Brian is going to have an opportunity to call it as well as time goes on, and I think the thing for Brian is that he’s done an excellent job of helping organize the offense. He’s done a good job of installing for the first time in this preseason in offense. That’s a big part of being a coordinator.
“And so we’re gonna do the same thing this fall. We’ll allow an opportunity to call plays, but also will bring it along the right way at the right time. I think it’s something that I have a great feel for. So there’s been times that we’ve called it and just had great conversation about thought process and situational football. So it will kind of be a joint effort, but I’m certainly going to be involved.”
Day said that there will be an opportunity for Hartline to call plays on offense, but it will be more of a joint effort.
Hartline’s first game as the OC of Ohio State will take place on Sept. 2 against Indiana. Kickoff will be at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
