Ryan Day isn’t easily pleased, so even after No. 2 Ohio State went into historic Wrigley Field and took care of pesky Northwestern, 31-7, on Saturday to improve to 9-1, the Buckeyes head coach wasn’t about to say his team pitched a perfect game, to use a baseball term.

Ohio State did trail, 7-0, early in the 2nd quarter before it got going, and Northwestern’s offense was able to move the ball pretty darn well on the Buckeyes during its first 2 drives. But OSU was able to limit the damage, getting a turnover on a fumble by quarterback Jack Lausch to stop the first drive.

After Will Howard and the Buckeyes offense erupted for 21 points in the final 7 minutes of the 2nd quarter, it was easy sledding for Ohio State.

“I thought we did a nice job in the first quarter kind of controlling the game, and then I thought again we got the turnover on special teams and then we sort of controlled the 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter,” said Day on the field after the game. “Would have liked to see us finish that 4th quarter out a little bit better. I felt like we did what we had to do … great to see Buckeye Nation here at Wrigley Field. I thought that was an unbelievable crowd today supporting our team, that gave us a lot of juice. Now it’s on to next week.”

And next week is a big-time showdown back in Columbus against undefeated Indiana, which will be coming off a bye.

“It’s one thing to play well one week and then not another week,” said Day. “We’re looking for consistency. Doesn’t matter the opponent. It’s about us. It’s going to be that way from here on out.”
