The 2019 Fiesta Bowl was supposed to be a good one. Through the first half, it has been exactly that.

Ohio State owns a 16-14 lead at the half, with both teams admitting that they have let opportunities pass them. The Buckeyes could have jumped out to an even bigger lead than the 16-0 one they had.

Clemson’s missed a field goal. Clemson’s missed interception opportunities. There is still 30 minutes to be played and the game is far from over.

Before the two teams sat down in the locker room, Ohio State coach Ryan Day was asked by a reporter about the first half and the change that happened once his team led 16-0.

He took a second to get into the momentum shift that occurred, but did talk for quite a bit about Buckeye defensive back Shaun Wade and his targeting call that led to him being ejected:

Day wasn’t afraid to bring up the Wade ruling because that’s what he felt changed the momentum of the game. From that point on, Clemson did go on a 14-0 run to close the half.

He isn’t exactly wrong. That said, the rule is the rule.

Wade was flagged for targeting and got ejected for it. The Buckeyes — as Day said to close the interview — must move on.
