Ryan Day has been Ohio State’s offensive play-caller throughout his time as the head coach of the Buckeyes. Heading into the 2023 season, that could drastically change.

During Monday’s College GameDay broadcast, Kirk Herbstreit mentioned that Ryan Day said in a production meeting that he’s going to give up offensive play calling. Day cited a bigger need of being a manager as a head coach.

“Ryan Day mentioned in our production meetings, he’s going to stop calling plays next year because he needs to become more of a manager as a head coach,” said Herbstreit. In his additional comments, Herbstreit said Day is “thinking about maybe relinquishing” those duties, so it’s possible Day’s decision is not final.

Here are Herbstreit’s full comments:

Such a move would be a major one for the Buckeyes. Determining who would take over as the offensive play-caller in place of Day is an interesting discussion, but it looks like we will have to wait and see if he does indeed make a move.

Though Ohio State fell just short in the Peach Bowl, Day’s game plan and offense was lights out as the Buckeyes nearly took down Georgia in Atlanta.
