Ryan Day explains why Ohio State doesn’t focus attention on the transfer portal

Ohio State is not a total stranger to landing key pieces via the transfer portal. However, the Buckeyes have been careful about how and when to use the portal to bring players in.
Most notably, Trey Sermon came to the Buckeyes for the 2020 season as a transfer out of Oklahoma. He turned in a remarkable season and record-breaking performance while with Ohio State before becoming a 3rd-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Still, Ohio State is not a program that has leaned heavily on transfers. On Friday, head coach Ryan Day shared some insight into the decision-making of the Buckeyes.
According to Day, the focus of Ohio State will be on developing the high school talent they recruit. In the end, Day’s concern about transfers comes down to “fit” within the team while also focusing “on the guys on our team first.”
“If the fit’s right, we’ll do it, but we’re going to focus on the guys on our team first.”
