Electing to go for it on fourth down and five on the edges of field goal territory late in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s victory over the No. 8 Penn State Nittany Lions, all of Ohio Stadium paused when sophomore quarterback Justin Fields initially failed to get up following a sack.

Fortunately, after being tended to by the school’s medical staff, Fields was able to walk off the field under his own power and the No. 2 Buckeyes appear to have averted a major crisis.

Speaking with FOX Sports’ Jenny Taft postgame, head coach Ryan Day briefly commented on his signal-caller’s status.

“I think he’s fine. He jumped up. He’s a tough kid.

“He took a tough shot there. Not what we wanted, but he’s a tough kid.”

247Sports shared further comments from the first-year coach on Twitter:

A precise, surgeon-like performance, Fields completed 16-22 passes for 188 yards and two scores in the Buckeyes’ win over Penn State.

Securing the B1G East title win the win, Fields also chipped in 68 of Ohio State’s 230 yards on the ground. Junior J.K. Dobbins led the attack with 157 yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries.

Transferring to Columbus after spending one year with the Georgia Bulldogs, Fields has thrown for 2,352 yards, 33 touchdowns and just one interception while piloting the country’s No. 1 scoring offense at 49.3 points per game.

Looking to finish the regular season a perfect 12-0, Ohio State will travel to Ann Arbor to face the No. 13 Michigan Wolverines on November 30 at 12:00PM ET on FOX.
