Ryan Day knows the defense made the difference on Saturday as Ohio State took down No. 5 ranked Notre Dame 21-10.
Ohio State fans have had their concerns when it comes to the defensive schemes with first-year defensive coordinator Jim Knowles at the helm, but those fears were allayed on Saturday, as the Buckeye’s defense became the highlight of the evening.
The Irish finished with only 253 yards and punted on their last 6 possessions, big stops for the Buckeyes. Ohio State gave up only 1 touchdown drive, then shut the the Irish out in the second half. The Buckeyes also held Notre Dame to under 100 rushing yards.
For the Buckeyes, it was a strong start to the season on defense, which struggled during the 2021 season. During his press conference, head coach Ryan Day acknowledged the big start.
On Jim Knowles and the Buckeye defense, Ryan Day said "it was the start we were looking for, for sure." Day says watching the film, they played really hard, really fast, really decisive."

"It was great to see them play the way they did," he said. "To see the defensive line win the line of scrimmage in that first game was excellent."
