Ryan Day still has a ways to go before naming a starting quarterback at Ohio State for the 2023 season.
The Buckeyes started fall camp Wednesday, just a month out from the start of the college football regular season. Following some time on the practice field Day met with media to discuss the plan for the Buckeyes this fall.
Perhaps most importantly, Day addressed the QB battle between Devin Brown and Kyle McCord. While at the podium Day insisted that both will take first-team reps across the next few weeks with the hope that someone will emerge as the season draws closer.

Ryan Day said he hopes to have Kyle McCord or Devin Brown emerge early in preseason camp.
“In an ideal world, you would like to have someone emerge in the first week or two.”

The winner between Brown and McCord will have some pretty large shoes to fill. The CJ Stroud era has come and gone, with Justin Fields doing big things for the Buckeyes before that.
Day insisted Wednesday that with the starting position come some pretty large expectations. That’s what it takes to play QB at Ohio State, after all.
Ryan Day on the standard former Ohio State QBs have set for future players at the position:
“We should be Heisman Trophy finalists and first-round draft picks,” he said. “Anytime you’re gonna be the quarterback at Ohio State, there is gonna be a lot of pressure.”

McCord, a 4-star in the Class of 2021, has slightly more experience than Brown at the QB position under Ryan Day. However, Brown may be the more physically talented of the 2 QBs.
Across his time at Ohio State McCord has thrown for over 600 yards with 3 touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Brown has yet to attempt a pass for the Buckeyes.
Strong QB play is paramount where winning a national title is concerned. FanDuel currently gives Ohio State +700 odds to win the national title in 2023, which are 3rd best in the country.
