Ryan Day will have a new DC on his staff in Jim Knowles. Knowles has been impressing Day this offseason.
1 of the things that Knowles has realized is how different the talent is in Columbus. Knowles comes from Oklahoma State, and has had to change the defense to fit what Ohio State has per Griffin Strom of Eleven Warriors.
Ryan Day says Jim Knowles has recognized that he has different talent in Columbus than he had at Oklahoma State and has tailored the Ohio State defense differently because of that.

Nonetheless, Day believes that Knowles’ system is mostly installed per Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus Dispatch. He brought his 4-2-5 defense with him to Ohio State.
Day said he believes most of Jim Knowles’ scheme has been installed.

Ryan Day also shared his thoughts on what makes a good football coach. What makes a good one in his eyes is the ability to tailor a scheme to what your football team has, which is what Knowles has had to do. Day is also looking forward to seeing DE’s J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer play, believing that they will have breakout seasons per Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors.
Ryan Day said Jim Knowles is doing a good job of tailoring his defensive scheme to the talent he has at Ohio State.
“That’s the sign of a good college football coach.”

Ohio State feels a lot more confident about their defensive positioning going into the season opener. Day stated that the Buckeyes won’t be rotating as many players in on defense this time around per Griffin Strom of Eleven Warriors. We’ll see how true that is on Sept. 3.
Ryan Day on not wanting to rotate a bunch of guys on defense like OSU did in the season opener last year: “We have a better feel for where everybody’s at” in 2022.
