Ohio State offensive coordinator Ryan Day will become the new head coach at Ohio State, following Urban Meyer’s decision to retire. The news was announced early Tuesday morning.
Day is in his second season with the program, working as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He also served as the acting head coach while Meyer was placed on suspension through the first three weeks of the season.
The Buckeyes were 3-0 in those games, defeating Oregon State, Rutgers and TCU.
Day has plenty of coaching experience over the years, making several stops at the college and NFL level. Prior to arriving at Ohio State in 2017, Day had spent the previous two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles (2015) and San Francisco 49ers (2016) as the quarterbacks coach. He also had served as the wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator at Temple (2006 and 2012) and Boston College (2007-2011 and 2013-2014).
With Ohio State’s offensive success and Dwayne Haskins’ Heisman-caliber season, Day gained plenty of traction as a candidate for head coach jobs across the country. But the Buckeyes were set on keeping the offensive coordinator in Columbus, and now it seems apparent why.
Meyer will step down following Ohio State’s appearance in the Rose Bowl Game against Washington on Jan. 1, 2019.
Meyer is deciding to retire after seven seasons with the program. He was 85-9 at Ohio State, winning three B1G titles and a national championship.
