Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has been one of the more notable voices in college football in terms of of individuals prioritizing their mental health.
Day was only 8 years old when his father committed suicide, but never truly faced his feelings head-on before taking a recruiting visit to a high school that had seen 7 students take their lives in a year. Fast forward to March, when offensive lineman Harry Miller retired from football after admitting to suicidal thoughts of his own stemming from his own mental health struggles.
On Tuesday, Ohio State announced a “mental health resilience fund” fronted by Day and his wife, Nina. Per 247Sports’ Patrick Murphy, the couple will “make a sizeable donation to fund research and services that promote mental health” to the university’s Wexner Medical Center, as well as its College of Medicine.
WSYX-TV in Columbus reported that the Days would be part of a Wednesday morning news conference detailing the fund, which will be hosted within the university’s psychiatry department.
