Ryan Walters had high praise for Bret Bielema and Illinois at his first press conference as head coach for Purdue.
The former Illinois defensive coordinator was announced as the head coach of Purdue Tuesday and was introduced Wednesday.
“I’d like to thank the University of Illinois and the Campaign-Urbana community for embracing my family the last few years,” Walters said at the press conference.

Walters also had praise for Bielema, calling him a mentor. He also thanked his former players and the rest of the coaching staff.
After leading one of the best defenses in the country, it almost seemed inevitable that Walters would take over as head coach somewhere. He replaces Jeff Brohm at Purdue, who left to take over at Louisville last week.
Walters is already making moves at Purdue, giving former walk-on RB Devin Mockobee a scholarship on Tuesday. It looks like he’s already off to a great start so far.
