Sam LaPorta did not have to wait long before hearing his name called on Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft!
With the 34th overall pick (3rd pick of the second round), the Detroit Lions selected the TE to join an offense that was top 5 in the NFL in scoring a season ago. LaPorta was the second TE off the board in this year’s draft, following Utah’s Dalton Kincaid in the first round.
Already, the Lions have added some pieces to work with the offense in the draft. The team used its first pick in the draft to select Alabama RB Jahmyr Gibbs to work with returning QB Jared Goff and WR Amon-Ra St. Brown.
The move also brings LaPorta a reunion with Iowa teammate in star linebacker Jack Campbell. Detroit selected Campbell in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft with a distinct Hawkeye flavor for the class.
The Lions are certainly no strangers to the idea of an Iowa TE. Detroit previously made TJ Hockenson a top-10 pick during the 2019 NFL Draft before trading him to the Minnesota Vikings this past year.
