Scheduling change: Date for the Orange Bowl has been moved

The Orange Bowl is no longer scheduled for New Year’s Day.

On Monday, the College Football Playoff, Orange Bowl and ESPN announced that the Capital One Orange Bowl will be played on Monday, Dec. 30 rather than on Wednesday, Jan. 1. The powers that be wanted the game to be scheduled for a nighttime kickoff, and with three other marquee games scheduled for Jan. 1

The game has primarily been played at night, and the goal is to keep that tradition in tact.

“The Capital One Orange Bowl was presented with a unique opportunity by our partners, including ESPN, Capital One, the ACC, Big Ten, SEC, Notre Dame, the Miami Dolphins and the CFP, to play this year’s game on Monday, December 30 in primetime,” Orange Bowl Committee president José C. Romano said. “With other bowl games planned for the early afternoon window on January 1, this move enables our game to stand alone as the only bowl game staged on Monday night, when fans are used to viewing football games. We are confident this traditional start time will be a positive for both the out of town and local fans who attend our game, as well as the television viewers across the country.”

The Orange Bowl will now be the only game played on Monday night. It also means that the New Year’s Six bowl games will be spread across three different days. Below is a look at the schedule:

  • Cotton Bowl — Saturday, Dec. 28
  • Peach Bowl (CFP semifinal) — Saturday, Dec. 28
  • Fiesta Bowl (CFP semifinal) — Saturday, Dec. 28
  • Orange Bowl — Monday, Dec. 30
  • Rose Bowl — Wednesday, Jan. 1
  • Sugar Bowl — Wednesday, Jan. 1

The College Football Playoff championship will be held on Monday, Jan. 13.

Because the Orange Bowl was already scheduled for Jan. 1, there will likely be another bowl game that takes its place for that date. That bowl game is unknown at this time.
