Expectations for Nebraska in 2019 might’ve been a little lofty, considering the program was coming off back-to-back 4-8 seasons. But nobody anticipated the Huskers would be struggling this much at this point the year.

Nine games into the season, Nebraska sits at 4-5, falling below .500 for the first time this week following a 31-27 loss to Purdue. A B1G West division title is out of the picture and bowl eligibility is anything but a guarantee. Hitting six wins is going to be quite an accomplishment.

This week, Scott Frost and company get a chance to relax and recuperate a bit before the final three-game stretch of the season. The Huskers have games against No. 13 Wisconsin, Maryland and No. 18 Iowa to close out the year.

Frost didn’t have his weekly press conference earlier this week because of the idle Saturday, but he did meet with reporters on Wednesday. While speaking with the media, the head coach was asked if Nebraska’s recruiting has taken a hit due to the recent struggles.

Frost denied that suggestion.

“People see where this is going and we’re not going to lose sight of that,” Frost said, in a video captured by Matt Reynoldson of KLKN. “This group has done an unbelievable job of getting the program turned. It’s certainly not happening as fast as I want it to. But we’re gonna get it done. That’s why I’m here. [We] knew this thing wasn’t in great shape when we took it over and we knew we had a lot of things to fix. We’re in the process of doing that.

“I think there’s a tremendous opportunity for recruits to come in and try to make an impact early. That vision and opportunity is going to help us on the recruiting trail a lot.”

Right now, Nebraska ranks eighth in the B1G in the 2020 recruiting rankings according to 247Sports, and sits 32nd nationally. The Huskers have 13 total verbal pledges, three of which are four-star talents. That’s pretty good shape as we approach the Early Signing Period in December.

We’ll see how Nebraska finishes the season in the final three-game stretch, and whether the program can pick up some signature wins down the road. That, more than anything, will help with recruiting.
